Flights Booking Hacks

Airfare is one of the few travel costs you can genuinely shrink with a bit of strategy. Two people on the same flight often pay wildly different prices — and the difference usually comes down to when and how they booked. Here are the hacks that actually move the needle.

Timing beats luck

For most domestic trips, booking three to eight weeks ahead hits the sweet spot; for international travel, aim for two to five months out. Mid-week departures (Tuesday and Wednesday) are typically cheaper than weekend flights.

Let the fares find you

Be flexible with airports and routes

A nearby secondary airport, or a one-stop itinerary instead of a nonstop, can cut the fare dramatically. Just weigh the savings against the extra time and any transfer risk.

Make points and miles work

A travel rewards card earns miles on everyday spending and often includes free checked bags, lounge access or companion fares that quickly outweigh the annual fee. Redeem points for expensive long-haul seats to get the most value.

Read the fine print on budget fares

Ultra-low-cost tickets look unbeatable until you add seat selection, carry-on bags and printed boarding passes. Add those extras to the base fare before you compare — sometimes a "pricier" full-service ticket is actually cheaper.

Book with a plan instead of on impulse, and you'll fly more for less — every single trip.
